Santa Clara, California-based Echelon Corporation reported that it will partner with the IBM Watson IoT program. Echelon intends to use the collaboration to make its adaptive streetlight control platform more intelligent to help municipalities become smarter, safer and more sustainable cities. Echelon says it plans to give its adaptive LED lighting control solution Watson IoT capabilities to enable a more intelligent infrastructure that can easily integrate IoT applications to reduce energy usage, improve public safety, and tackle environmental challenges.

IBM Watson IoT is a cognitive system that can learn from the physical world with the help of sensors and infuse intelligence into connected devices. According to Echelon, combining IBM Watson IoT data with its IoT-connected streetlighting architecture can give municipal leaders significant insights to improve public safety and reduce energy consumption. Furthermore, Echelon notes that IBM Watson IoT capabilities closely align with its promise to cities of enabling them to more economically leverage technology innovations that can improve safety and sustainability.

“With a mission to continually advance our adaptive streetlighting solution, we are excited at the prospect of integrating the cognitive and real-time analytics capability of IBM Watson IoT into Echelon’s platform to enhance its inherent intelligence,” said Sohrab Modi, Chief Technology Officer, Echelon. “If mayors and town selectmen can have infrastructures that adapt to the data produced by billions of interconnected sensors and devices, they can positively impact crime and weather-related accident statistics. The omniscience that IBM Watson IoT will bring to our next-generation technology will be a huge asset for local and state governments.”

Echelon points out that it will bring the Lumewave by Echelon® lighting control platform to the partnership. Also, Echelon says that it will contribute its history and expertise in developing protocols and communication control solutions and its next generation architectures for multi-application Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks to the IBM Watson IoT partnership. According to Echelon, its product portfolio supports a broad range of lighting and building communications protocols including DALI, BACnet, Modbus, LON®, and LonTalk/IP and more for a wide variety of devices which allow easy integration into an open platform.
