The development and expansion of university campuses tend to take place one section at a time. This type of expansion often leads to a wide range of outdoor lighting used throughout a particular campus. The UC Davis campus is no exception.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has set the goal of having a 60 – 80% reduction in lighting energy consumption by 2020 compared to 2007 lighting energy usage. In answer to that call, UC Davis established the Smart Lighting Initiative (SLI), to reduce campus-wide lighting electricity consumption at least 60% below 2007 levels.
