The Case For Control and Monitoring Systems for LED-based Street Lights
For extensive municipal streetlight installations, control and monitoring of the LED-based street lights are not just a good idea economically, it is virtually a necessity for management and maintenance. LED street lighting by itself commonly saves around 50 percent or sometimes even more compared to its conventional counterparts such as high-pressure sodium. This savings translates into thousands, and often millions of dollars per year in larger installations.
By itself, lighting does pay for itself well within the projected lifetime of the luminaires. LED street lighting installations in cities have proven economic justified again and again. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Gateway Demonstrations of Solid State (LED-based) street lighting is a prime example.
